The following are the main reasons to join the board of the “SPWLA Houston Chapter”:

  1. It's an excellent way to interact with industry folks/students and learn how to work & interact with different people from diverse cultures. This is a golden opportunity for me to broaden my professional and social network.
  1. A great way to enhance my professional career, as I support the mission, vision and goals of the SPWLA.

  1. It's a great opportunity to enhance my skill sets such as leadership, team player, organizational and communication skills etc.
  1. Last but not the least, to get a lifetime experience of being a part of team “SPWLA Houston Chapter” and contribute in its future success.

Finally, I would like to thank the committee search team in advance for considering me for the position of Vice President – West Side.

Anish Kumar

Anish is a Senior Geologist with the North America Interpretation Development Group in Schlumberger, working in the South Dairy Ashford Office in Houston.  Anish got his Ph.D. in Geology from Texas Tech University in 1997.  He worked as a Geologist and Lab Manger for SCAL, Inc., in world of core analysis, for four years.  Anish joined Schlumberger in 2001 as an Associate Interpretation Development Engineer, in New Orleans.  He moved to Houston in the second half of 2005.  A big focus for Anish has been and continues to be integrating Petrophysical and Geological Data for reservoir solutions, going beyond what is currently obvious.  Anish was the Technical Committee Chair for the SPWLA International Symposium held in New Orleans in 2005.  Anish was also the President of the New Orleans Chapter of SPWLA for 2005 – 2006.  After Katrina, which disrupted the city and the local Chapter Membership, he got the chapter back on its feet again, finding new locations to host Monthly Chapter Meetings after the existing meeting location was damaged, among other issues.  Anish is also the Printing and Publicity Committee Chair for the 2009 SPWLA International Symposium to be held in The Woodlands later this year.

I would like to run for the position of Vice President – Westside of our SPWLA Houston Chapter because I believe that I can provide valuable input to the direction of our Westside Chapter.  We definitely have decent talks at our monthly meetings, I would like to continue that and take it even farther.  I have a keen interest in the activities of the Chapter, which I believe should be setting the standard for SPWLA chapters all over the US and the world – after all, Houston is the Oil Capital of the World.  As far as the Westside segment of our Chapter, we have a lot of young talent in this area of Houston that we serve, and I would like to engage the companies in this “Energy Corridor” to get their next-generation Petrophysicists and Geoscientists heavily involved with the chapter Westside segment.  SPWLA is 50 years young, now is the time we kick off the next 50 years.

Jesús M. Salazar

Jesús is a Petrophysicist in the Subsurface Technology Team with ConocoPhillips in Houston, TX. He is involved in a number of domestic and international reservoir characterization projects. Jesus is interested in formation evaluation, inverse problems, and near-wellbore fluid-flow simulation. From 1997 to 2002 he worked for PDVSA in Venezuela dealing with unconsolidated sand reservoirs. He was the petrophysicist in charge of several integrated reservoir studies and also the field log analyst while working in the heavy oil business unit. Jesús also worked for Oxy as a summer intern in Bakersfield, CA and Houston, TX. He has published 12 papers on international conferences and peer reviewed technical journals and is recipient of the best paper award published in Petrophysics in 2006. Jesús received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2004 and 2008, respectively and a B.S. degree in Physics (with honors) from Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1998. During his years as a graduate student he was bestowed four times with the SPWLA Foundation scholarship and was co-organizer of the 2007 SPWLA Symposium in Austin, TX. Jesus is a member of SGE, SPE, and SPWLA and has served as a guest technical reviewer for the SPE Journal.

Ever since joining the oil and gas exploration and production world I have been involved with the SPWLA in Venezuela and Austin, TX. Last year I said to myself that I should be more committed with the Society and decided to run for Secretary of the Houston Chapter. During my tenure, I have encouraged colleagues to join our Chapter and attend to our meetings and special events. Now, I’m running for Westside VP because I want to continue with my involvement by bringing excellent speakers and presentations of practical and scientific interest.

Secretary

Alexander Kostin

Alexander Kostin received M.Sc. degree in Applied Physics and Mathematics from Moscow Institute of Physics & Technology, Russia in 2003. After graduation he joined Schlumberger and worked as LWD field engineer in Caspian, project technical leader in the R&D center in Sugar Land, TX and is currently a senior petrophysicist with Schlumberger Data & Consulting Services. He has been a member of SPWLA since 2007. He recently gave a talk “Reconciling Wireline and LWD depth measurements” at the Westside SPWLA meeting.

When I gave a talk during last SPWLA Westside meeting I realized that there’s more that I could do for the Society than simply giving talks and attending the meetings. I would like to serve as chapter secretary to promote education and knowledge in the science of formation evaluation by helping organize local meetings, invite guest speakers from universities and the industry and keep our local chapter members informed about SPWLA and industry events. I hope that my background in science, field experience and current log analysis work will help maintain the agenda of our chapter meetings relevant, interesting and focused on the new technology.

Mayank Malik

Mayank is a Petrophysicist for Applied Reservoir Management team with Chevron MidContinent US and Alaska business unit. He received a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 2001, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Toronto in 2004, and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in March 2008. His dissertation was focused on simulation and interpretation of formation-tester measurements acquired in the presence of oil-base mud-filtrate invasion. His research interests include log interpretation, inverse problems, and single well modeling of fluid sampling measurements. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, he worked as a summer intern for Shell International E&P and quantified parameters affecting WFT measurements in retrograde condensates. Mayank has published 15 papers in international conferences and peer reviewed journals such as Petrophysics, JPSE, and SPE Journal. He was granted two SPWLA Foundation scholarships and was co-organizer of the 2007 SPWLA Annual Symposium in Austin. Mayank is a member of AAPG, SPE, and SPWLA.

I have been a SPWLA member for the past five years and I was on the organizing committee of the SPWLA Symposium 2007 held at Austin, Texas. Being involved with SPWLA has given me opportunities to advance my knowledge and also to interact with professionals from the oil industry. I would like to continue my involvement with SPWLA by running for the post of Secretary for the Houston Chapter. SPWLA is transitioning through a time when many young petrophysicists and log analysts are being placed with higher levels of responsibility in the industry. In this environment, we are facing challenges in the transfer of technical knowledge, experience, and managerial skills between generations. By being a secretary of the Houston Chapter of SPWLA, I would like to start mentoring opportunities in formation evaluation and encourage involvement by young petrophysicists in the oil industry

Fellow Members, in 2008 we implemented considerable changes to the 'Look & Feel' of the Houston SPWLA website, going from printed newsletter advertising to the current shockwave driven dynamic linked icons, which allow our financial supporters better opportunities to communicate their services to the community with a minimum of impediment & distraction to the website visitor. FWIW the old newsletters have not been abandoned, but are continued as linked PDF documents that you can still choose to print as desired. Elimination of the printing and mailing of the Newsletters has streamlined and simplified the publishing process, giving our VP's more time to procure interesting Speakers and saving the Chapter money.

In 2009 I would like to continue our plans for the modernization of the website by adding pages for individual members seeking employment or offering services, to freely post electronic 'business cards' with email links. One of those 'cards' will then be randomly selected at each page refresh for a highlighted spot on the top of the front page dynamic icons. Hopefully this will aid our community match people to job opportunities in these trying times. I also plan to add a Utilities page that would serve as a quick source for mnemonics translation, and a site for freeware Petrophysical Evaluation software tools interchange and download. Finally I plan to replace the current Events page with an iCal compliant Calendar, to simplify communication of upcoming meeting schedules and chapter events.

Dear SPWLA Houston Chapter Member,
I am pleased to have the opportunity to run as a candidate for the Houston Chapter Webmaster position. I have been an active SPWLA member for three years, and here is a chance for me to help more.
I believe the SPWLA chapter officers’ volunteer nature and its members’ busy work schedule require an efficient and reliable website for information distribution and management. A presentable business website helps to improve the brand value of SPWLA Houston Chapter which in turn helps in recruiting new member and soliciting sponsorship.
I have published 2 papers in SPWLA and am active in SPE FE Discussion forum. I am an active member of Houston SPWLA chapter since I moved to Houston last year. I've been working on the printing and publicity committee for the 2009 SPWLA Annual Symposium in Houston since last year. I contributed ideas for the symposium logo and helped reviewing the brochure you all have received. I have strong software programming experience and have experience setting up and maintaining website using Dreamweaver and Fireworks for small businesses like SPWLA.
When you cast your votes for Webmaster, please select my names as your preference, so I can implement for the following improvement for Houston SPWLA website.

  1. Frequent link page validity check and fix.  No more “Page not foundL”.
  2. Implement self service email list subscription for newsletter and meeting notice.  Zero subscription maintenance.
  3. Implement direct appointment download to outlook and other schedule management program.  No more copy, paste, wrong date or time in outlook.
  4. Standardize the look and feel of every page.  Same color, font, layout etc.

Looking forward to your help,
Zhipeng Liu

Although still being a new member of SPWLA, I am enthusiastic and proud of the organization. I consider it a great honor to be nominated for the webmaster position. If elected, I will strive to enhance the organization through leveraging not only the technologies at hand, but by using them to conserve the resources and character of SPWLA.

While I’ve already contributed to the internet presence for SPWLA by developing the Sponsor Advertisement module of the Houston chapter website with during 2008, I would like to see additional functionality added to the site to benefit the membership.  Some of the areas I have identified as potentially benefiting from development are:

  • Podcasts of Speaker Luncheons
  • Online archives of older meetings and newsletters
  • Conservation and collection of older photographs, articles, etc.
  • Online calendar showing upcoming events by category, location or other criteria
